Beschuit met Muisjes

Published: Saturday, 25 April 2015

Beschuit met Muisjes are the traditional Dutch treat for newborn babies. Parents will prepare these for people who come to celebrate their newborn baby with them. The muisjes are in pink for a newborn girl, and in blue for us – for a newborn boy.

Beschuit met Muisjes means "biscuit with mice". The biscuit (rusk) is a very light, dry, double-baked, variation on bread; not quite like a cracker, but somewhere in between. The mice are sugared and colored aniseeds. Their rodent name is probably due to the stems of the aniseeds sticking out.

The muisjes were shipped in from the Netherlands, the biscuits from the Dutch Store in Beaverton, and so we are ready to go!
